How To Rock Your Next Dance Audition

Since I don’t really have any shows going on right now, I thought I might share some tips I’ve found useful throughout my time at WMU. Since I’m definitely not a dancer by nature, these are some of the tips other people have passed on to me that I’ve found useful. If you’re a “mover” like me, or even if you’re a bona-fide dancer, you’ll probably find at least a few of these useful. I’ve organized them into an easy format of Do’s and Don’ts
DO
1. Practice sequencing
2. Work on connecting the movement to the music
3. Find “anchors” in the choreography – places you can skip to if you get lost
4. Find someone you can watch besides the choreographer or dance captain
5. Smile and show your personality
6. Express the “acting” inherent in the choreography
7. Wear flattering clothing
8. Perform even when you’re learning the combination – they are watching
9. Listen to direction and ideas from the choreographer
10. Get help in the hall if you have the opportunity
DON’T
1. Put so much energy into the steps that it is obvious where you lack technique
2. Ask too many questions
3. Stand in the back during the learning process
4. Apologize for your abilities
5. Dance on the sidelines
6. Worry if you are not as good as others – you may be there for different reasons
